Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR)

Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) is a term that refers to procedures that are designed to regenerate bone to repair defects around natural teeth and dental implants that were previously placed or to generate additional bone in areas that are deficient prior to the placement of bridges or implants

This process is achieved utilizing bone grafts protected by biocompatible membranes which keep fast-growing gum tissue out and allow bone to grow.

If you suffer severe periodontal disease, the bone in the jaw that supports your teeth may be damaged. Additionally, after a tooth is lost or extracted, much of the bone that surrounds the root of the tooth can be lost. Such bone loss is called "bone resorption".

Regardless of the cause, bone loss leaves some patients with difficulty in eating or speaking, a less attractive appearance, or with too little bone to secure a dental bridge or implant.

Guided Bone Regeneration (GBR) is a technique used by our doctors to create additional bone in areas that are deficient. This procedure can be performed: prior to placing fixed or removable bridges or dental implants; in order to repair defects around implants that were previously placed; or to improve a patient's oral health, appearance, and ability to eat and speak properly and in comfort.

During GBR therapy, the doctor opens the gum in the affected area. Regenerative membranes are then surgically placed between the gum and bone, allowing your natural bone tissue to grow and heal without interference. The regenerative membranes block fast-growing gum tissue, enabling the slower-growing bone cells to fill in the areas of bone loss. In some cases, the defect in the bone may be filled with different types of material before placement of the protective membrane barrier in order to support the re-growth of bone.

Guided Bone Regeneration therapy helps your body to heal itself by naturally increasing bone in the jaw to support replacement options such as implants and builds a foundation of bone which protects the health of your surrounding natural teeth.

GBR therapy is also used by our doctors as an aid to restoring your periodontal health. After treatment, the bone in your jaw is returned to adequate height with a ridge that is able to support your tooth correctly for proper function and a great smile.

GBR therapy is performed six months prior to the placement of an implant. Our doctors will be able to advise you about the time necessary for GBR therapy to be effective in your own individual case.

Following GBR therapy, your doctor will advise you on proper home oral care to protect the area immediately after surgery and in preparation for the placement of your bridge or implant.

If GBR therapy is performed to help renew your periodontal health, the doctor will discuss immediate and ongoing home oral care along with periodontal maintenance appointments to keep your oral health going strong.
