Periodontal Deep Scaling and Root PlaningNon-Surgical TreatmentThe American Academy of Periodontology recommends that your periodontal health should be maintained in the least invasive manner possible. Following these guidelines, our doctors practice non-surgical periodontal treatment whenever possible. Non-surgical periodontal procedures include deep scaling and root planing. Many patients need no further treatment after these procedures have been performed but the majority of patients require ongoing periodontal maintenance therapy to preserve their periodontal health. Deep scaling is a procedure in which our doctors carefully clean the root surfaces to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from deep periodontal (gum) pockets. Root planing is a technique which allows our doctors to smooth the root of the tooth to remove the bacterial toxins that cause gum disease to fester and spread. We utilize both hand and ultrasonic instruments to perform these procedures efficiently and effectively. These treatments may be followed by adjunctive therapy such as the use of local delivery antimicrobials to fight infection depending upon the individual case. Although not always so, most patients require periodontal maintenance therapy to maintain renewed periodontal health. |
