Dental BondingDental bonding, also referred to as composite bonding, is a technique which our doctors employ for a multitude of cosmetic dentistry options. It utilizes a tooth-colored composite resin material similar to the enamel of the teeth. Bonding is used to repair chipped, cracked or discolored teeth, to fill gaps between teeth, to protect the root of a tooth, and as an alternative to amalgam (silver) fillings. During the bonding procedure, the doctor selects a shade of composite resin closest to your own tooth shade. Your tooth surface is then roughened and liquid is applied which helps the composite bond to the tooth. Next, the doctor applies the composite resin to your tooth and sculpts it into the correct shape. A high intensity light known as a curing light is used to harden the composite. Finally, the surface is polished and is indistinguishable from natural tooth enamel. Bonding on one tooth can be accomplished in just one visit. If more than one tooth is being bonded, a few additional visits may be necessary. Dental bonding is an excellent choice to change the color or shape of a tooth, to repair chipped or broken tooth surfaces, to close spaces between teeth, and to create a tooth-colored filling for small cavities. If your teeth have flaws or have suffered damage, please call our office to learn how the technique of dental bonding may be the answer for you. |
